Jenny wasn't there yet so i took a seat on the patio and ordered a coffee.
i pulled out my cell and checked to see if there were any messages. nada. i dialed Glen's number.
he wasn't in so i left him a message. "check your email, bitch." i hung up and called Sandy at work.
she said she was happy that i called. that she was worried i'd "done something stupid".
"you're kidding, right?"
"no, i'm not kidding. remember that chick Julie who off'd herself over Walter T----."
"she was an idiot."
"yeah, well even idiots feel the pain of a broken heart."
"probably true."
"definitely true. how you holding up?"
"you get today's shag?"
"yeah, wasn't it romantic?"
"SANDY!"
"oh fuck. sorry. i meant as a completely objective thing. like, if i wasn't aware that he'd dumped you i would have thought it romantic."
"thanks. how's work?"
"same as always."
Sandy hated her job and was always threatening to quit. problem was, she didn't threaten her bosses or anything. just her friends.
"actually, Igor is coming down the hall. i gotta split."
"wait--"
but she'd already hung up. i was gonna tell her what i was doing and see just how bad an idea it was. maybe if i had someone telling me to run before Jenny arrived i'd take it on the heel and toe and get the fuck outta dodge. [mp3]
i plopped a toonie down on the table and was getting up to go when i saw her coming down the street. she wasn't looking towards the cafe so i might have been able to scoot before she saw me but it was too late. she looked at me just as i was scanning for a place to hide.
she waved. i smiled and she entered the patio. i told her i was just gonna use the washroom and i'd be right back.
